From April 24th to 28th, 2024, the Rwanda Resilience and Grounding Organization (RRGO), led by its Executive Director, Samuel Habimana, was invited by the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Center for Social and Community Justice. The purpose of this invitation was to honor the memory of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda and to present Rwanda’s journey toward resilience and reconciliation from 1994 to 2024.
Remembering the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
During his visit, Mr. Habimana gave a keynote presentation at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Library by Prof Paul Draus titled “Remembering and Reconciliation: Rwanda’s Journey 30 Years After the Genocide.” His address highlighted the progress Rwanda has made in healing from the trauma of the genocide, focusing on the resilience of the Rwandan people. The event emphasized the importance of remembrance and reconciliation’s power in building peace and unity.

Strengthening Social Justice Initiatives Through Global Collaboration
While in Michigan, Mr. Habimana explored various social and community projects, including an innovative green space project aimed at creating recreational parks and gardens in Detroit. This initiative, blending environmental sustainability with the cultural expressions of local artists, seeks to enhance community cohesion and improve quality of life.
Additionally, RRGO representatives visited a Michigan prison in Detroit, where they shared insights on the “Laughter Yoga” program and the Community Resiliency Model, both of which focus on rehabilitation and trauma healing. These projects align with the University of Michigan’s social justice mission, providing tools for resilience to those living in challenging conditions, including prisoners.

This partnership between RRGO and the University of Michigan has laid the foundation for future collaborations.
